It gives us hope for some cliché love in real life (not guilty). Sometimes all you need is a good film with a happy ending after a hectic day at work. These movies remind you of your firsts, your first crush, your first date and many other things. And you can’t be considered a Bollywood buff if you haven’t enjoyed these films and deep down everyone does and you know it! Adding humor to romantic films is like the perfect combination, just like soft drinks and popcorn.
So here we are with nine Bollywood romantic comedies which should be in your watch list in case you haven’t watched it already. Happy Bingeing!
1. Band Baaja Baarat (2010)
Band Baaja Baarat directed by Maneesh Sharma was actor Ranveer Singh’s debut film alongside Anushka Sharma and it will always remain one of his best works. The story follows the lives of business partners Bittoo Sharma (Ranveer Singh) and Shruti Kakkar (Anushka Sharma) who start a wedding planning business called Shaadi Mubarak. The business does well and everything is going fine but when Shruti falls for her business partner Bittoo, everything goes haywire. The songs are what get this film some brownie points, they will get you all groovy and ready to take the dance floor.
2. Jab We Met (2007)
The film that gave everyone the epic dialogue “Main Apni favorite hu”, Jab We Met Directed by Imtiaz Ali, features Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. The story revolves around Aditya (Shahid Kapoor) a business tycoon who while escaping his boring life, meets Geet (Kareena Kapoor) a bubbly Punjabi girl while he boards a train. And from there starts an unforgettable and crazy journey. This film is perfect in every manner, from the chemistry between the two actors, to the storyline and songs this film is one of our top favourites.
3. Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)
After watching this film the only desire one has is to plan a memorable trip with their friends. Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Kalki Koechlin and Aditya Roy Kapoor not only gave us some amazing songs but a film we’ll always remember. The story revolves around Bunny/Kabir (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (Deepika Padukon) who are school batch mates and reunite during a trekking trip where she falls in love with Bunny but doesn’t confess her feelings. After drifting apart they meet again after eight years at Aditi’s (Kalki Koechlin) wedding, and the two fall in love.The film perfectly captures friendship and romance.
4. Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
One of the best films of 2015, Dum Laga Ke Haisha directed by Sharat Katariya, stars Ayushman Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar. The story follows the lives of Prem Prakash Tiwari (Ayushman Khurrana) a school droupout who gets married to Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) an educated girl. Prem resents his wife because she’s overweight but the two come closer after participating in a couple’s race. The film beautifully shows how looks don’t matter what matters is the bond and understanding two people share. Dum Laga Ke Haisha was also actor Bhumi Pednekar’s debut film and till date one of her best performances.
5. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
“Kya tum mantally sick ho my bwoy?” If you know, you know! Directed by Zoya Akhtar starring Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is definitely a must watch. The film revolves around three friends Kabir (Abhay Deol), Imran (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) who take a vacation to Spain before Kabir gets married. The trip makes them fall in love with life and gives them opportunity to mend their relationships with one another. What we and the audience loved about this film was it was so much relatable and engaging.
6. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya (2014)
One of the cutest pairs on screen is that of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, there is no way one can stop smiling while watching their films. Directed by Shashank Khaitan this film is definitely one of the cutest rom coms and won’t disappoint you. The story follows the lives of Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt) who is about to get married to Angad (Sidharth Shukla) an NRI. She comes to Delhi for her wedding shopping but ends up falling in love with Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan) a carefree guy. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya is all things funny, cute and you’ll have a great time watching it.
7. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (2015)
Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, directed by Luv Ranjan is the sequel of his film Pyaar Ka Punchnama which was released in the year 2011. This film is an all in one, from the dialogues, the songs, the cast everything fits perfectly and is definitely worth your time. The story revolves around three friends Anshul (Kartik Aryan), Siddharth (Sunny Singh) and Tarun (Omkar Kapoor) who fall in love with the girls of their dreams at the same time but soon their relationships become toxic and their dream turns into a nightmare. This film is like a rollercoaster ride. You don’t want to miss it.
8. Partner (2007)
Do you need a love guru to help you with your love life? Don’t worry Prem (Salman Khan) is here for you. Directed by David Dhawan this multi starrer film won’t disappoint you and that’s for sure. The story revolves around Prem, a love guru who shares dating tips with his clients. Bhaskar (Govinda) with the help of Prem tries to woo his boss Priya (Katrina Kaif). Prem being a casanova falls for a single mother Naina (Lara Dutta). And then continues the story of the two couples and how they deal with all the fun drama they have in their lives.
9. Lukka Chuppi (2019)
Kartik Aryan and Kriti Sanon starrer Lukka Chuppi follows the lives of Guddu (Kartik Aryan) a reporter who falls in love with Rashmi (Kriti Sanon) and then the two decide to start a live-in relationship without informing their families about the same. To cohabitate they pretend to be married and live around a lot of nosey neighbors who keep doubting the two. The film takes a chaotic turn when their families think that they eloped and got married. Directed by Laxman Utekar this film is like a breath of fresh air during these times.
10. Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)
The innocence of Bareilly Ki Barfi and some stellar performances by Kriti Sanon, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Rajkummar Rao put them on the map. Kriti Sanon plays the role of Bitti in this rom-com set in a small town. She is a free-spirited girl who does not succumb to others' thoughts. She soon falls in love with Pritam Vidrohi played by Rajkummar Rao who has charmed her with his progressive way of thinking and writing stories on it. However, seeking him turns out to be a task for her. She then meets Chirag Dubey played by Ayushmann Khurrana who owns a printing -press and takes his help to search for Pritam. What Kriti is unaware of is that the book which made her fall in love with the author has been written by Chirag itself. This journey of love becomes all the more interesting following Bitti's quest for love. Packed with humorous dialogues and cheesy-romantic moments - this is a great pick for a weekend watch.
11. Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Three friends, One road trip, and a classic love story! Dil Chahta Hai has gone down in history to be one of the best rom-coms because of its relatable storyline and flawless performances. The romance and friendship are deeply entrenched in this simple film that only goes on to show some real-life experiences. Three guys fresh out of college, combatting life's many struggles yet the strong bond always brings them back to each other. Aakash (Aamir Khan), Siddharth (Akshaye Khanna), and Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) are the kind of trio we need to get through life's journey. Preity Zinta's portrayal of Shalini was commendable as well and the innocent love story of her character with that of Aakash (Aamir Khan) is to date, one of the sweetest.
12. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
19 years later, Kal Ho Naa Ho is still that evergreen rom-com that we can never get enough of. It still makes us laugh and cry in equal measures and reminds us why it is a gem of a film in this genre. The storyline revolves around Shah Rukh Khan who plays the role of Aman Mathur, he is suffering from an incurable disease and has a few days in hand. He takes it upon himself to reunite the love of his life - Naina (Preity Zinta) with her best friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan). It is a deeply emotional film, beautifully packaged with its humorous and romantic moments as well. With an amazing music album and applaud-worthy performances - Kal Ho Naa Ho will make you cry happy and sad tears all at the same time!
