Stylist Pranay Jaitly talks about why Radhika Apte’s Emmy’s look was special

Radhika Apte is an actor, who stands distinct with her choice of roles. The gritty and intense performer believes in pushing the envelope each time. Right from the beginning, her work has mirrored her maverick personality, glimpses of which are seen in her sartorial style as well.

Unconventional, earthy and raw, Radhika’s personal style is just as intriguing as her professional choices. Styled by duo, Pranay and Shounak, Radhika has showcased a non-conformist look book ever since she began. She recently walked the red carpet at the Emmy Awards for her fine act in the anthology Lust Stories. Being the only Indian ever to sport an Iris Ven Herpen creation from his Hypnosis collection, Radhika Apte sent out trailblazing waves at the event. We caught up with her stylist, Pranay, to find out everything that went behind this iconic look and gained rich styling insights in the bargain…

How would you describe Radhika’s personal style?

Clean, minimalist and classic.

What would go into creating a look for someone like her?

I come from the maximalist thought. I’ve always been inspired by Italian fashion. I don’t understand minimalism. So, when it comes to styling someone, who’s essentially so minimal, we must remain balanced. We go clean and minimal with her hair and make-up, while we keep her accessories and dress overpowering. So, it’s 50-50 of both.

What went into putting together her look for the Emmys?

Radhika and I saw the dress the first time in New York, two days before the event. When she tried it on, it appeared so perfect. It’s rare when an outfit appears so complete that it doesn't need anything else. Radhika felt the same. I remember Radhika holding her hair back that day. She looked so stunning with the clean face. That's when I suggested she pair a ring with it. If you see the photos, you can't notice it as the ring blends so well with the dress. But it’s a beautiful orange stone ring going into a yellow sapphire. It’s unique because there are these tiny stones put together as a flower. Even her shoes were of the same colour. Radhika mentioned that she didn’t like to accessorise her outfits unnecessarily. But the moment the ring came and I asked Radhika to wear, it seemed so gorgeous. It fit her well and she wore the ring before she wore the dress. The last thought before she left the room was whether to give her higher heels or stick to what we had. We ended up with what we had.

What about her after party look? She went with her signature classic style.

It’s important to make a personality look a certain way –  that is appear glamorous. But their comfort means a lot as well. If they’re not comfortable and even if the attire’s not event appropriate, I end up staying away from it. Radhika liked the jumpsuit but believed it was inappropriate for an after party where she’d be alone. She pointed out that if she had to go to the washroom, she’d have to open it. That would have been tiresome. Practically, it wasn't the best option. We had another outfit, which was great, in her comfort space and more dramatic with regards to the sleeves. It had a plunging neckline with padded shoulders. the thigh high slit was risky but that's what made it sexy. The downward portion was shimmery. I gave her Parker shoes, which had a diamond broach. We made her carry on with the same make-up and hair because it was right after the main event. We didn’t have much time to change it. Also, it went well with the outfit. We didn’t feel any need to add jewellery. It was simply about comfort.

Her look is memorable because she’s been the first one to wear designer Iris Ven Herpen’s creation. Tell us more about this collaboration.

Radhika is the first Indian actor to walk on the Emmy's red carpet. So we didn’t want her to wear something conventional. We wanted it to be edgy. It was also the first time Radhika was attending an international red carpet of this level. So we wanted to create a strong impact. We are extremely grateful for the response we received for it globally. Initially, we were scared because it was a huge risk for an Indian to wear something like this. It was great that Radhika trusted us. It was always on our mind not to dress her in something conventional or seen before. Hence, the brand and the dress worked.
