5 reasons to watch Anushka Sharma’s Paatal Lok

Anushka Sharma as an actor has been riveting. As a producer too, she’s been as engaging. Her projects, like NH10, Philauri and Pari, produced under the banner of Clean Slate Films, were off the beaten track and spoke of her unique sensibilities. She isn’t afraid to push boundaries. Anushka’s now produced the web series, Paatal Lok. It was made available to stream few days ago and has been a trending topic on social media ever since. Here’s listing five reasons to watch it…

1. A Phenomenal Script


Written by Sudip Sharma, the characters are well-fleshed out and have impactful dialogue. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, Abhishek Banerjee, Gul Panag and Swastika Mukherjee, it spotlights politics and power play within the police force as also the shenanigans of the media, which is both avaricious and victimised.

Directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy, it makes you question your judgement of right and wrong, making you realise that there’s more than meets the eye. That this is a nation of extremes – where wealth and squalor, power and discrimination co-exist. The web series also points out that there are two sides to every sin, every situation.

Drawing parallels with the ancient concepts of the Tri-Lok that is Swarg Lok (heaven), Dharti Lok (earth), Paatal Lok (netherworld), the web series manages to paint a metaphoric picture of new India, where power, crime and politics are engaged in an unholy dance.

Paatal Lok is not just graphic in violence like many other web series but builds up the thrill with its shocking characters and plot. The thriller-cum-police procedural set in and around Delhi, is meticulously crafted and keeps you engrossed in the hunt for truth. Child abuse, domestic violence and lynchings… it’s all real and consuming.

5. Excellent Cast


The inclusion of names like Abhishek Banerjee, Jaideep Ahlawat, Neeraj Kabi, and Gul Panag alone justify the point. However, a special mention must be made of Jaideep’s performance. A disgruntled cop, Hathi Ram Chaudhary (Jaideep), is assigned a high-profile case of a murder attempt, which leads him to a hell hole of deceit. How he balances his disillusionment with the system along with this opportunity to shine, gives momentum to the plot.
